A biomedical scientist in the United States is usually required to hold a PhD in biology or a related field. If patients will be treated a license must also be obtained.   • PhD program. A PhD program that best suits your interest will be selected. If any clinical work will be done a medical degree will be needed as well. A typical PhD program will require 5 years to complete and a dissertation will have to be presented and defended.
