Accreditation of biomedical science engineering

When considering various biomedical science programs, one of the things to consider in a program is whether or not the biomedical science courses offered are accredited or not. Depending on the location of the school and the type of program offered there are different accrediting bodies that can give more credibility to a program. In some cases accreditation is voluntary, while in others a course is not considered legitimate unless it has received the proper accreditation. In the United States biomedical engineering programs may be accredited by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology). Accreditation means that the standards of the courses you are taking meet the standards of the industry. ABET accredited programs provide the following benefits:

  • Provides schools structured mechanism to assess, evaluate and improve the quality of their programs.

ABET accreditation is often required for eligibility for federal student loans, grants and scholarships. A minimum curriculum is established for all engineering programs. Students may either work as a biomedical science trainee during the time they are enrolled in biomedical science courses, or upon completion of a biomedical science program. During the course of their laboratory training, students should demonstrate the following:
