Biomedical Science Interview Questions

Preparing for a Biomedical Science Interview

If you are pursuing a career in biomedical science then there will be at least two very important interviews that you will need to be prepared for. The first of those will be the interview to enter a biomedical science university program after writing biomedical science personal statement. Not every program requires an interview but it never hurts to be prepared. The second interview will be when you are looking for employment after graduation. If you are lucky one interview will be enough, but more than likely you will participate in several before landing the biomedical science job that you want. In both interviewing to enter a school program and interviewing for a job, the key to success is advance preparation.

The following are some general interview tips that will apply to both biomedical science interview situations:

  • Always arrive at the interview on time. Showing up late is disrespectful and you will have one strike against you before the interview even starts.
  • Dress appropriately. Wear professional attire that is neat and well kept.
  • Maintain good eye contact with your interviewers.
  • Answer questions clearly and avoid rambling.

Biology is more than just knowledge – it is a weapon to be used against the myriad of diseases we are faced with each day. Through my experiences working in laboratories dedicated to fighting various pathogens, I have been inundated with a sense of responsibility towards the world I live in. Johns Hopkins University’s Biomedical Sciences program is among the topmost in the world for people sharing my same passion, which is why it is my first choice for my graduate studies.

Delving into the world of biomedical sciences requires a great amount of dedication. For the past six years, I have worked in the Pathology lab of Dr. Susan Edenberg at New York University. Dr. Edenberg and I have worked in conjunction with researchers from Johns Hopkins, such as Dr. Purhab Patel, on many projects including the elucidation of downstream activators of caspase-19. Throughout my research, I have focused on the body’s response to sepsis. In 2012, Dr. Edenberg and I developed a drug for suppressing HMGB1 induced inflammation for patients with moderate sepsis; the drug is now in phase 2 clinical trials. I plan to continue my research on severe inflammation in graduate school, because my research has shown me that sepsis may be linked to a severe autoimmune defect which causes overexpression of TLR 4 receptors. I would like to further elucidate the genetic variants for this disease.

Johns Hopkins University has an entire department dedicated to studying immunological disorders, which is a resource not found in many other universities. Combined with its strong research focus and NIH-backed funding, I feel there is no better place for me to pursue my graduate degree. I hope that through the skills and connections that I make at Johns Hopkins, one day sepsis will no longer be the painful and lethal disease that it is now.

Biomedical Science Interview for University Application

When interviewing to enter one of the top universities for biomedical science program keep the above tips in mind. It is impossible to anticipate all the biomedical science university interview questions you may be asked. However, there are a few basic interview questions for biomedical scientist that often are asked that you may consider preparing answers for including:

  • Anything on your personal statement. If you included something on a personal statement be prepared to answer any related questions.
  • Why do you want to study biomedical science? These are often the most difficult types of question to answer if you aren’t prepared. Avoid stereotypical answers and be honest.
  • Why did you choose this school? Do some research before your interview and provide an answer that shows you have done your research, and that you are familiar with the school and its program.
  • What are some career goals? It is expected that you will have some idea of what you will do with your degree.

If field related questions are asked that you don’t know the answer to, don’t panic. Often, interviewers don’t expect you to know. They want an idea of how you think. Avoid answers that are negative or speak poorly of any institution or former instructors. Have some questions of your own to ask about the program that is relevant.

Biomedical Science Job Interviews

Again, it is impossible to anticipate all the biomedical science job interview questions that could be asked. However, the following are some standard interview questions that are common:

  • What can you do for us that other candidates can’t? Be prepared with some of your positive attributes but try to avoid sounding boastful. If you claim an attribute be prepared to provide examples.
  • What do you consider your most significant accomplishment?
  • Describe a difficult work-related incident and how you handled it?
  • Why do you want to work for this organization?

Don’t rush your answers during your biomedical science interview for a job. Organize your thoughts then speak directly to the point. Avoid any negative comments regarding past employers. Prepare a few questions of your own that are relevant to the position to show you have taken the time to do some research, and remain focused throughout the interview.
